Gettysburg National Park Quarter

The new series of quarters featuring National Parks and National Sites will continue in 2011 with the issuance of the 2011 Gettysburg National Military Park Quarter. This will represent the sixth release in the series overall. The site was selected for the state of Pennsylvania.
The US Mint has released the potential designs for the upcoming Gettysburg National Park Quarter. The four candidates were reviewed by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee and Commission of Fine Arts. The CCAC recommended the first design representing Pickett’s Charge, while the CFA favored the third design.
Immediately after the Battle of Gettysburg, numerous sites began to be preserved through the efforts of concerned citizens. The lands were eventually transferred to the federal government when Gettysburg National Military Park was established. President Grover Cleveland signed the authorizing legislation on February 11, 1895.
