National Parks Quarter Design Selection
National Parks Quarters will feature 56 different designs released at a rate of five coins per year starting in 2010. The United States Mint has established a formal design process for each National Park or National Site to be featured on the reverse design of the new quarters.
The design process begins following the National Park Quarters site selection process. At this point, the Secretary of the Treasury will have already approved a final selection of the 56 sites to be used for the quarter’s reverse designs. The US Mint will contact the head of the federal department or agency which is responsible for each site to request the appointment of a liaison to assist the United States Mint.
This liaison will assist the US Mint by identifying source materials for the candidate designs. The US Mint will use these materials to produce three to five candidate designs for each site. The liaison will ensure the historical accuracy, authenticity, and overall composition of each candidate design.
The final candidate designs will be submitted to the Secretary of the Interior, chief executive of each host jurisdiction, Commission of Fine Arts, and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee for review and comment. Changes or adjustments may be made to the designs based on the comments provided.
The Director of the United States Mint will make a final recommendation to the United States Secretary of the Treasury after considering all input received during the design process. The Secretary of the Treasury will have the final responsibility for selecting the design which will appear on each National Park Quarter.
