Olympic National Park Quarter
The 2011 Olympic National Park Quarter will be released as the third new quarter design for the year, and the eighth overall release in the America the Beautiful Quarters series. This site was chosen for the state of Washington.
The United States Mint initially created four different design candidates for the Olympic National Park Quarter, which were evaluated by various committees before the final design was selected by the Treasury Secretary. In the end, an image of a Roosevelt Elk stepping onto a gravel bar of the Hoh River with Mount Olympus in the background was the favorite. This was chosen above other designs, which featured plain landscapes.
Olympic National Park was explored by Lieutenant Joseph O'Neil and Judge James Wickersham. O'Neil found the mountains and slopes to be of high value and recommended that they should be incorporated into a National Park to protect them. The area first became a Forest Reserve by an Act of Congress in 1897 and later a National Park in 1938.
The Olympic National Park Quarter is currently scheduled for circulation release on June 13, 2011. Prior to that date, the quarter will be available within annual numismatic sets produced by the United States Mint. At some point during the year, 5 oz silver coins bearing the design will also be issued.
